Eight architectural companies keen to design Nalanda University

Eight architectural companies, including six from abroad, have shown interest in designing the upcoming Nalanda University in Bihar, the vice chancellor said Friday.

"We are happy that eight companies, including two Indian companies, have submitted their proposals for a global competition to finalize the design for the university," Gopa Sabharwal said here.

She said the short-listed firms would be called to make their presentation either this month or next month.

The university is set to come up on 446 acres in Rajgir, 10 km from the site of the ancient university in Nalanda district, southeast of Patna.

The university will be fully residential, like the ancient Nalanda university. It will offer courses in science, philosophy and spiritualism along with social sciences.

The project took shape in 2006 at the initiative of then president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The ancient university at Nalanda was home to over 10,000 students and nearly 2,000 teachers.

It existed until 1197 and attracted students and scholars from Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Indonesia, Persia (now Iran) and Turkey.

Sushil Kumar Modi inaugurated the 21st Rajgir festival at Qila Maidan

Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi inaugurated the 21st Rajgir festival at Qila Maidan on Friday. The newly built international convention centre's inauguration was postponed as chief minister Nitish Kumar could not reach Rajgir from Delhi due to inclement weather.

Minister of art, culture and youth affairs, Sukhda Pandey, mines and geology minister Satyadeo Narayan Arya, vice-chancellor of Nalanda University Gopa Sabarwal, principal secretary, tourism, Deepak Kumar, MP from Nalanda, Kaushlendra Kumar and all the MLAs and MLCs of the district were also present.

The absence of chief minister on the occasion dampened the spirit of the revellers. The visitors were also disappointed as Sufi singer Zila Khan also failed to reach the venue. He was to perform on the opening day of the festival. People were looking for tourism minister Sunil Kumar Pintu who also could not reach here, despite the fact that his department is the chief sponsor of the festival along with district administration, Nalanda.

The Rajgir festival, which was earlier known as Rajgir Nritya (dance) Mahotsav, was started in 1986. The then chief minister, late Bindeshwari Dubey, had inaugurated the festival in Swarna Bhandar area on April 4. 1986 in the presence of the then Union tourism minister, late HKL Bhagat, the then state tourism minister Uma Pandey and the then state deputy minister of education, Surendra Kumar Tarun.

The tourism department-sponsored festival continued till 1989. It was not held for the subsequent four years before getting revived in 1994. Since then, it is an annual event on the calendar of Bihar Tourism. With a change of venue and the added colour and development of new tourist spots in the last few years, the festival has become a favourite event for domestic as well as foreign tourists.

Following chief minister Nitish Kumar's initiative and timely execution of programmes by DM Sanjay Kumar Agrawal for the development of tourists spots, including Ghora Katora dam, Pandu Pokhar etc, and the renovation of various pilgrim centres in and around Rajgir, the festival is now organized at a more accessible Qila Maidan in the backdrop of Ratnagiri hills. Various sporting activities like tonga race, martial arts competitions, mehndi contest, mahila utsav, food plaza, gramshree mela etc have been introduced besides organizing performance by artists of national and international repute.

The efforts of the tourism department and the district administration to add something new every year have also paid off. This year, they have included horse race and a book fair for the tourists.

Noted artists like Hema Malini. Sonal Man Singh, Birju Maharaj, Bhupen Hazarika, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ghulam Ali, Talat Aziz, Ravindra Jain, Hari Haran, Shovana Narayan, Jaspinder Narula, Alka Yagnik, Meenakshi Seshadri, Roop Kumar Rathod and Sonali Rathore have already performed during Rajgir Mahotsav.

Bihar boy’s film shines at Cannes

Gaya born Abhijeet Kumar’s film Namah Shivaya Shantaya has opened to rave reviews at the Cannes film festival on Monday. The film was screened at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival at the Indian pavillion 108, Village International, organised by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the industry body ASSOCHAM.

The film, based on the teachings from the book of the same name by Shrii Anandamurti, has at its core the renewal of a great and timeless message, still as relevant today as it was in times of old.

Bringing to life the story of Lord Shiva’s fight for justice, righteousness and peace in the fledgling society of his day, that message emerges, in essence, as that of unification: the coming together of all people as one; of all minds as one mind; and – ultimately – of all minds with the Oneness that pervades and encompasses all things for all time.

Born on January 5, 1983 Gaya, Abhijeet did his B.A (Hons.) in Psychology from Magadh University, Bodh Gaya.

A natural artistic talent, Abhijeet Kumar began his film-making journey with a vision of higher-quality entertainment for society. An MA in Film and Television Production, he has produced and directed many critically acclaimed short films and features, and acted in numerous movies, television serials, commercials and plays.

With Namah Shivaya Shantaya, under adverse conditions presenting numerous creative and logistical challenges, he succeeded admirably in pulling off a wide variety of creative and production tasks: director, executive producer, actor, script translator (from the original English), and cast and crew coordination.

Abhijeet’s creative and managerial talents eventually got the film off the ground and completed within a very short span of time and with extremely limited resources.

Currently, Abhijeet Kumar runs his own film production company ‚ DIA Entertainment ‚ and is working towards his next film. He is planning to produce a film “Nalanda” based on the massacre by Muslim invaders at the ancient Nalanda University.

The other Indian films showcased at Cannes this year are - Hrithik Roshan starrer Kites, Teen Patti featuring Amitabh Bachchan as a math professor and Aamir Khan’s hit film Taare Zameen Par among others.link
